Course Syllabus—a document that the College regards as a contract between an instructor and his/her students that outlines the main points of each credit class offered at the College

Required Syllabi for Credit Courses: All credit courses must have written course syllabi.

 

Faculty shall supply written syllabi to students enrolled in their courses within the first five (5) days of the instructional quarter. A syllabus may be supplied in printed form or electronically (in pdf form) through the Canvas learning management system. 

 

Per Policy 6100, each course syllabus must include the following:

  • Course name and number, classroom location and related labs, and class meeting time
    • Faculty must meet students for class at the locations and at the times listed in the published quarterly class schedule
  • Instructor’s name, office number, telephone extension, email address
    • Faculty will be assigned office space, telephone numbers, and email addresses by the College
    • For compliance with FERPA regulations, faculty should use Shoreline email addresses or secure Canvas messaging for electronic communication with students
  • Office Hours (see Article VII, Section D, Paragraph 1 of the CBA):
    • Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
    • Full-time faculty with teaching loads of up to twenty (20) 50-minute contact hours per quarter shall maintain five (5) 50-minute hours per week of posted office hours; faculty who are teaching part of their instructional load online may substitute synchronous online office hours on a proportional basis for on-campus office hours; for example, a faculty member teaching five (5) 50-minute contact hours online may substitute one and two-thirds (1.65) synchronous 50-minute online office hours for the equivalent face-to-face office hours
    • Full-time faculty with teaching loads of 20 or more contact hours per quarter may arrange an alternate schedule of office hours with their unit administrators
    • Associate faculty should maintain office hours proportional to their teaching loads; for example, an associate faculty member teaching ten (10) 50-minute contact hours per week should schedule three and a third (3.35) 50-minute office hours per week
  • Major student learning objectives for the course in compliance with appropriate learning outcomes
    • Shoreline maintains an electronic Master Course Outline (MCO) with learning objectives, learning outcomes, and suggested assessments for each credit course; faculty may obtain MCO’s for the courses they are teaching through their divisions and/or departments
    • Master Course Outlines are written by faculty and are approved through a process that begins at the division level and includes the Curriculum Committee
    • Faculty may also obtain prior course syllabi through their division offices
  • Statement of the official published, recommended and/or required prerequisites
    • Course pre-requisites are listed in the published course catalog
    • Shoreline uses the COMPASS test for English and Math placement
    • Sequential courses or advanced courses may carry prerequisites
    • A decimal grade of 2.0 (or a letter grade of P) is a passing grade for purposes of meeting specific course prerequisites
    • Placement Testing scores are used for English and Math placement
    • Testing Center is located on the ground floor of FOSS
  • Required text, supplementary materials and other possible supplies or activities requiring student expenditures
    • The Bookstore’s textbook manager sends reminders to faculty to order books for the following quarter, and faculty submit textbook requisitions directly to the Bookstore via an electronic ordering system
    • Some departments order common textbooks for all sections of a particular course
    • Faculty often put extra copies of required textbooks on reserve in the Library for use by students who cannot afford to purchase their own texts (Library Reserves)
    • Some departments make extra copies of textbooks available in learning centers (e.g. ESL/GED Learning Center, Math Learning Center)
    • Some faculty post to Canvas scanned (pdf) copies of first chapters of textbooks for use by students who are waiting for financial aid distribution at the beginning of the quarter before purchasing books
  • If applicable, assignment schedules, an approved informed consent statement for any and all human subjects activities and requirements for laboratory, clinical, studio, library/media, performances and/or related course activities

  • Brief description of all major assignments, including due dates
  • Date, time and place of the final examination in accordance with the final examination schedule as published in the quarterly Class Schedule

    • All final exams must be held in the scheduled location during the scheduled exam period
    • Scheduling final exams during the last instructional week of the quarter is not permitted except during Summer quarter when final exams occur on the final day of instruction

    • The SCC Bookstore sells Blue Books and Scantron forms for use in exams
  • Information about class contingency plans for when the campus is closed (compliant with Policy #6030, Suspended Operations)

  • Definition and consequences of cheating and plagiarism in compliance with the applicable Washington Administrative Codes (WACs) and campus policy (compliant with Policy #5033, Dishonesty in Academics)

    • Faculty may include attendance and/or participation among grading components so long as instructors announce attendance requirements in advance (see Policy 5020,  Attendance Requirements)
    • Explanation of faculty settings for Canvas Gradebook
  • A Students with Disabilities policy per federal law re: the Americans with Disabilities Act advising students of their rights under this law and contact information for the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (compliant with Policy #5114, Reasonable Accommodation of Students with Disabilities)
    • Students must be registered with the Services for Students with Disabilities Office to receive accommodation
    • Faculty will be notified in writing by the Services for Students with Disabilities Office at the beginning of the quarter that students with registered disabilities are enrolled in their courses, and informed of the specific accommodation each student is entitled to receive

    • There is an Accommodated Test Instruction Form to send to the Services for Students with Disabilities Office if students are eligible for quiet testing space or extended test times

Curriculum Planning and Course Scheduling

  • Courses are scheduled through departments with the approval of division planning committees (see CBA, Article VIII, Section C, Paragraph 2)
  • Course capacities are set by the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, except for online courses, which have an enrollment capacity of 30 unless the face-to-face course capacity is lower (see CBA, Article VII, Section D, Paragraph 1(c)(4))
  • Faculty Teaching Loads (contact hours) are specified in the faculty collective bargaining agreement by discipline (see CBA, Article VII, Section E, Paragraph 1(c))
  • An Annual Schedule of Classes helps students plan their courses of study; faculty should revise the Annual Schedule whenever departmental course offerings become inconsistent with this schedule
  • Curriculum Committee oversees implementation of general education outcomes, core course outcomes, course additions and revisions, and degree and certificate additions and revisions; each academic unit has faculty representation on the Curriculum Committee
